Philpotts squeezed out

It’s not news that Pacific Grove’s Dave Byrd took home another win in NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series action at Altamont Motorsports Park.

It is news that Tracy’s Philpotts — at least one of them, but sometimes two or even all three — weren’t right behind him.

An influx of new drivers Sunday led to Altamont’s highest car-count of the year in WLM racing and squeezed the Philpotts down to seventh, eighth and ninth — for Justin, Ryan and David, respectively — in the 21-car race, anywhere from five to eight seconds behind Byrd.

Newcomers Mike David of Modesto and Phil Perry took second and fourth, sandwiched around Altamont regulars Benny Moon in third and Scott Shade in fifth.

Tracy’s Brandon Trevethan took 10th.

For Byrd, driver of the Miller Motorsports No. 21 Dodge and a NASCAR Division II national points leader, the win was his 10th of the year and fifth straight. The last time he didn’t win a WLM race was July 9, when David Philpott took home the checkered flag. Before that, Byrd’s last “setback” was a June 4 win for Ryan Philpott.

This weekend, Altamont will go dark in honor of Stockton 99 Speedway, which will host its final race Saturday. The historic track is to be demolished to make room for a housing development.

The father-and-son Philpotts — two-time Stockton 99 points champion David and his 16-year-old son, Justin, the hands-down favorite to win Rookie of the Year honors at both Stockton and Altamont — will compete.
