West High School history teacher Justin Frantz planted a kiss on a 2-day-old calf as the school celebrated National FFA Week with its 11th annual Kiss a Critter contest Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Students and faculty members paid 25 cents per vote to decide which teacher or administrator kiss the calf provided by Justin Pimentel, a 2008 West High alumnus.

Frantz, an eight-year member of West High’s teaching staff and a FFA member in his high school days, was selected to kiss the calf during both lunch periods.

All week, the school’s FFA students have set up games and a petting zoo, and will set up food booths Friday, Feb. 22, to make other students aware of the club’s activities.

FFA advisor Marlene Hepner said the club’s 238 students — an increase from the year before — study agriculture and raising livestock and enter animal-showing competitions each year.

Earlier in the school year, the West High FFA club for the first time hosted a fall festival along and a plant sale to reach out the Tracy community.
