The game was halted in the third quarter when Elliot senior Jon Lerma took a knee to the head in a mid-court collision.
Millennium team trainer Sherrie Linford called for an ambulance because Lerma was briefly knocked unconscious and appeared to have suffered a concussion. He was conscious when the ambulance crew arrived to take him to San Joaquin General Hospital for examination.
Teams traded the lead through the second half, and Millennium senior guard Mark DeWitt charged up from the left to make a layup with two seconds left in the fourth to make it a 35-35 game at the end of regulation.
Junior Marques Shanks said Millennium knows it can keep up with its best league rivals, as long as the Falcons bring a desire to win to all four quarters — and overtime.
“We brought a lot of energy and heart,” he said. “We wanted to come out with more intensity.”
Elliot broke the stalemate in the second overtime as sophomore David Lerma hit a series of free throws, making him 11-for-14 from the line.
DeWitt had a game-high 18 points, including three 3-point shots. Junior Derritt Scarver added 11, and Shanks scored nine points and had 11 rebounds.
Millennium (13-10, 3-3 Central California Athletic Alliance) stays in a tie for third in the league with Sierra Ridge/Rite of Passage, while the Elliot Eagles (19-4, 5-1 CCAA) is hanging onto second place in the league.
On Jan. 24, Millennium scored a 40-37 victory over Sierra Ridge/Rite of Passage on Jan. 24 at Tracy High.
It took a fourth-quarter Millennium surge, led by senior guard Mark DeWitt, to get the Falcons back on top at the end.
“We’ve just got to keep playing hard,” DeWitt said. “Hard defense, hard on the boards boxing out and just getting loose balls. It’s all hustle. If we can hustle, we’ll win most games.”
DeWitt, who turned his ankle on a hotly contested rebound in the first half, returned to the game in the second half to score 14 of his game-high 17 points.
His shots included a field goal at the start of the fourth to tie the game at 33-33, and a 3-pointer to put the Falcons ahead.
