Superintendent Dale Hansen said as Mountain House continues to grow, the need for additional schools grows with it.
“This is exciting,” Hansen said. “There aren’t too many districts that have our situation where growth is happening so fast.”
When completed, the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school is expected to hold 800 to 900 students.
No groundbreaking date has been set, as the start of construction will depend upon the growth of the housing planned to surround the school.
“We want to stay ahead of the game and be prepared,” Hansen said.
The school, which has not been named, would be about a quarter mile from the high school under construction within Neighborhood C, in the southern portion of Mountain House.
On Jan. 16, the school district board voted unanimously to hire architecture firm Nichols, Melburg and Rossetto, which also designed the community’s under-construction high school and the school in Altamont Village.
The next step will be to bring together architects and the neighborhood’s developer, Shea Homes, to plan the number of type and houses that will be built in the area to estimate the number of families that might move in, Hansen said.
Shea Homes President Layne Marceau said home-builders will be able to purchase about 400 Neighborhood C lots for development by May or June.
Hansen said officials are getting a jump on the school because it takes about a year for the project to go through numerous approval steps at the state level.
He hopes to have the project in the hands of the state office of Public School Construction by January 2014, so officials can begin to secure state money for the project.
Officials estimate it will cost $30 million to get the school built.
The most recently completed school in Mountain House, Questa Elementary, is open and is expected to house almost 800 students by 2013-14.
Altamont’s school is expected to break ground in March and will house an additional 800 students when it opens, which officials say should be in June 2014.
