West High senior Amrit Singh brought home the bronze medal at the Tim Brown Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18, and Sunday, Jan. 19.

Kimball High senior Nathan Pearlman also took seventh place during the tournament that was held at the Sacramento Convention Center.

They were among 14 local wrestlers, including six from West and eight from Kimball, to attend the event. Kimball’s team placed 15th out of 97 teams, and West was 47th. The top team was Clovis West of the Central Section.

The event drew about 850 top high school wrestlers from all over northern and central California, Nevada and Oregon.

The tournament is named for a former Foothill High wrestler who was killed in action in Iraq in 2006 while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps.

West’s Singh, wrestling in the 195-pound weight class, won two matches to get to the quarterfinals, where he lost a 7-5 decision.

He then won a 10-1 decision over Kimball High junior Matt Cooper, won two more by decision and won the third place match by injury default.

Pearlman (285) went 5-2 on the day, including a win by pin in the seventh-place match.

Cooper was eliminated just short of the medal rounds with his loss to Singh.

Other Kimball wrestlers to finish one match short of the medal rounds were junior Robert Delgado (106), sophomore Reese Chew (120), junior Trent Nicholson (138), and senior Austin Griffith (152). West senior Roy Bravo (138) also was eliminated just short of the medal rounds.

West won its home Tri-City Athletic League dual meet over a small St. Mary’s team on Thursday, Jan. 17, at West High. The win puts West at 2-1 in TCAL duals.

West senior Jeff Sapiandante (120) won his match with a third-round pin, sophomore Alex Soto (132) won with a third-round pin, and senior Scott Romo (160) won a decision. St. Mary’s won two by pin and one by decision.
