The Vikings pulled within five points of West, narrowing what was a 39-29 halftime lead, when West senior forward Michael Young nailed two quick 3-point shots, followed by another outside shot from senior guard Hayden Ordone.
“A good defense leads to a great offense, and I feel like we executed on offense,” Young said. “Leaving the open shooters on the perimeter got us some confidence. After the first one, I just felt the rhythm and kept going.”
The win put West (15-6, 2-2 Tri-City Athletic League) in charge for the rest of the game, as Young went on to score 10 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter.
The Wolf Pack continued to hit shots, while the Vikings (8-13, 2-2 TCAL) struggled to control the ball, and ended up with just one field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Wolf Pack hit nine 3-pointers, which coach Derek Sprecksel attributed to heads-up passing — players repeatedly drove to the inside and then kicked the ball to the open shooter.
“We’ve got to work to get those opportunities,” Sprecksel said. “I think getting more rebounds and getting some more points in the paint created more opportunities for kickout 3s, too.”
West ruled the boards, allowing Edison few second-chance shots. Young pulled in 12 rebounds, and center Obrien Nnaji had nine.
West was also on target from the line, making 12 of 15 free throws. Other leading scorers were senior guards Kenneth Daye, with 13 points, and Justin Saar, with 12 points.
Edison won the sophomore game 54-50, and the Vikings freshmen beat West, 53-47.
