The driver, whose name had not been released by the coroner’s office as of 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, died Friday after he was flown by helicopter to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto.
California Highway Patrol officers at the scene described the man’s injuries as major.
The driver was traveling east on I-205 in a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio when he swerved from the right lane of the three-lane highway and struck a 2011 Ford pickup in the center lane, according to a CHP report of witness statements.
The car then veered back across the road and drove off the freeway, crossing the median dividing I-205 from the 11th Street off-ramp.
The car rolled through the median and landed on its roof on the south edge of the 11th Street off-ramp. The driver of the pickup was uninjured, according to the CHP.
Tracy Fire Department crews cut the driver free of the wreckage, and he was flown to the Modesto hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Les Garcia, spokesman for the San Joaquin County Sheriff-Coroner, did not immediately return requests for comment Monday.
