A man was seriously injured when his car veered off the eastbound lanes of Interstate 205 and rolled over on the off ramp exit to 11th Street on Friday, Jan 4.

California Highway Patrol officer Hector Davila said a Volkswagen Cabrio was traveling east on I-205 in the right lane of the three-lane highway just before noon, when witnesses said the vehicle drifted into the middle lane and sideswiped a pickup truck in the middle lane.

The car then veered back to the right, crossed over the right lane and went off the shoulder of the freeway and over a grass median and began to roll in the soft dirt until it stopped on its roof on the right shoulder of 11th Street.

Davila said the car rolled at least a “couple of times” but it’s unclear exactly how many times.

The truck involved stopped a short distance away from the crash on I-205, and the driver uninjured.

Davila said the car came to stop on 11th Street off ramp about 1,500 feet from the entrance from I-205.

Tracy fire crews had cut the driver out of the vehicle. He was the only occupant of the car.

He was flown by helicopter to an area hospital with what the CHP described as “major injuries.”

CHP Sgt. John Martinho said later that afternoon that officers were unable to find the man’s driver’s license at the scene.

Martinho said investigators are still trying to identify him as of Friday at 5:30 p.m. The officer noted that the driver is an Asian man who appears to be in his late 20s to early 30s.

The off ramp to 11th Street from I-205 was closed for about an hour as crews worked to free the driver and land the helicopter on the road.

Traffic on I-205 was also slowed as officers took measurements on the roadway.
