Maria Isabelle Gonzalez, 6 pounds, 8 ounces, was delivered by natural birth at 10:52 p.m. at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.
Her parents, Leonel Gonzalez, 38, and Socorro Gonzalez, 36, were gathered at the hospital Tuesday, Jan. 2, with the couple’s three older children and Socorro’s parents and sister, who arrived on New Year’s Eve to help with the baby.
Socorro Gonzalez said that she was feeling “fine” and that she was most excited because the newborn is her first daughter. Her other children are Jesus, 3, Mario, 12, and Leonel Jr., 13.
She is looking forward to “watching her grow, slowly but surely.”
Maria Isabelle slept comfortably in Mom’s arms on Tuesday, her head topped with a knit cap resembling a strawberry, with a green sprout top and red seeded sides.
Leonel Gonzalez, who has lived in the city since 1974, was also excited to have a daughter.
“When I first held her last night, it definitely brought a tear to my eye,” he said.
The family took their newest member home Thursday, Jan. 3, to a purple and pink room that was decorated by Socorro Gonzalez in her favorite colors.
Because Maria Isabelle was born so long after midnight, Leonel Gonzalez said he was surprised to hear she was the first baby of 2013.
“I didn’t even think about that until the nurse brought it to my attention when they were admitting her,” he said. “It surprised me, definitely. The nursing staff was more than excited, and we couldn’t be more grateful to them. I’m very satisfied with the hospital staff.”
The Gonzalezes said they are thankful for the support that they received during the pregnancy.
“I’m fortunate, and we are fortunate, because her co-workers, and even my co-workers, have given us lots of gifts, which was very unexpected,” Leonel Gonzalez said. “It’s going to be an exciting day every year, for sure.”
