Kimball wins in second round

The West and Kimball boys basketball teams advanced to the semifinals of the West/Tracy Winter Holiday Classic Tournament after two rounds of play on Monday, Dec. 17, and Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Teams from Tracy and Delta Charter high schools were bumped into the consolation bracket after early setbacks.



Kimball 65, Pacheco 53

The Jaguars struggled in the second half but were able to survive on a 45-27 lead the team had at halftime over Pacheco on Tuesday at Tracy High.

Kimball (7-4) shooters had trouble making their shots in the first part of the third quarter Tuesday.

The Panthers (3-3) went on to outscore the Jaguars in the second half, but were unable to catch up.

Kimball senior DeVante Baisa led the team with 18 points, and senior Alex Toledo contributed 15.



West 88, Modesto 57

West and Modesto played a close first quarter at West High on Tuesday.

The Wolf Pack (9-3) took charge of the game in the second and third quarters as junior Kenneth Daye and senior Michael Young went on a scoring run against the Panthers (5-6).

Daye led all scorers with 27 points, including three 3-pointers in the third quarter, while Young racked up 18.



Downey 66, Tracy 62

The Bulldogs held a 30-29 lead at the half on Tuesday at Tracy High but fell behind in the third quarter as the Knights hit more of their shots.

Tracy juniors Devin Foster and Damon Stroup led the Dogs’ scoring effort in the fourth as they started to catch up, but Tracy (2-9) ended up four points short as Downey (4-6) took the win.

Foster scored 17 points for Tracy and junior Jeff Takahashi added nine.



Livingston 58, Delta Charter 25

Delta Charter Dragons kept up with the Livingston Wolves in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game at West High, thanks to a couple 3-pointers from junior guard Jordan Thornton.

Delta Charter (2-4) fell behind as the Wolves (6-4) shut down the Dragon offense in the second quarter. Livingston went on to extend its lead in the second half.

Leading scorer for Delta Charter was senior center Joseph Peebles with nine points, and Thornton scored six in all.



West 88, Delta Charter 24

The Wolf Pack used its backup players early in Monday’s game after West took a 52-11 lead over the Dragons at the half.

West hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter but dialed back its game, which was played at West High, in the second quarter.

West junior Alvin Crenshaw was the Wolf Pack’s leading scorer with 15 points. Junior Anthony Ross added 11 and senior Obrien Nnaji scored 12. Delta Charter’s leading scorer was senior Joseph Peebles with 15 points.



Kimball 55, Downey 29

Seniors Evan Owens and Derek Van de Streek led the offensive effort for the Jaguars in their first-round win over Downey High of Modesto at Tracy High on Monday.

Kimball took a 20-3 lead in the first quarter. Downey started to catch up in the second but couldn’t maintain the pace. Owen scored 13 and Van de Streek score 11 for the night.



Pacheco 63, Tracy 62

Pacheco chipped away at Tracy’s 46-42 third quarter lead to make it a close finish at Tracy High.

Tracy took a 62-60 lead with 25 seconds left after junior Damon Stroup sank a shot from the floor, but Pacheco’s Edgar Iglesias hit a 3-point shot with 15 seconds left to take the game away from Tracy.

Junior Josh Brakkee led the Bulldogs with 21 points, Stroup scored 18 and Dre’Shaun Moore scored 10.
