EDITOR,

As I complete my final year on the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, I want to thank the residents of the 5th District and of the entire county. It has been an honor and a privilege to represent you these past 10 years.

I have witnessed and been part of the county’s economic highs and lows. I have represented San Joaquin County and chaired the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District during its most tumultuous period, when we had it take the valley from a severe to extreme air quality designation.

I was appointed by the governor to the Partnership for San Joaquin Valley and made a co-convener of the challenging water committee. I had the privilege to serve as board chairman twice, as well as serve on the San Joaquin Council of Governments, Local Area Formation Commission, co-chair of the County Jail Expansion Committee, and other committees.

These past 10 years have been my personal master’s and PhD experience. I leave proud of my public service and standing up for what I believe in, even when it wasn’t popular to do so. I look forward to life’s next challenges and opportunities, and to spending more time under palm trees with my feet in the sand with an adult beverage in each hand.

The residents of San Joaquin County owe me nothing — I owe you everything.

• Editor’s note: Leroy Ornellas has represented Tracy, Mountain House and part of Manteca on the board of supervisors since 2002, when he was first elected to serve the remainder of a vacated term. He was elected to full terms in 2004 and 2008, and was termed out in 2012. He operates a dairy outside Tracy.
