Kimball High junior Trent Nicholson won outstanding wrestler honors as he helped his team place second at the Bay Area Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Castro Valley High.

In addition to Nicholson’s four-match victory in the 138-pound weight class, the Jaguars had seven wrestlers finish in the top eight at the event, including three gold medalists, for a team score of 152.

Tracy wrestlers prevail at Kimball

Wrestling coaches from Tracy and Kimball high schools got an early season look at their lineups during a cross-town dual match Thursday, Dec. 6, at Kimball High.

Tracy won, 45-32, in a match that featured five new varsity wrestlers — two for Tracy and three from Kimball — winning matches.

“We had a lot of new guys. I feel really good about what the future holds for Tracy wrestling,” Tracy coach Tony Leanos said. “We’re in the building process still, but it looks promising.”

Tracy won eight of 14 matches, including six by pin, one by decision and one by forfeit.

Among the new varsity wrestlers, Tracy sophomore Tomas Landeros (145 pounds) pinned Kimball junior Nathan Kountz in two minutes, 25 seconds, and sophomore Richard Vasquez (182) beat Kimball sophomore Ernesto Inguanzo on a 15-10 decision.

Tracy sophomore Zoheb Bafaiz (152) pinned Kimball senior Austin Griffith in 2:44, junior Antonio Orosco (160) pinned senior David Gamez (160) in 3:24, sophomore Noah Blackwell (170) pinned senior Zachary Gilkerson in 1:10, junior Alex Warner (220) pinned senior Logan Finley in 4:29, and senior Albert Landeros (126) pinned sophomore Reese Chew in 1:39.

On Kimball’s side of the ledger, first-year varsity sophomore Quincey Hudson (132) scored on a series of first near-falls against Tracy junior Roberto Garcia, and Hudson earned a pin in the second round with a time of 2:46.

“Quincey never wrestled before,” Kimball coach Pete Mullen said. “He wrestled pretty well for us.”

Mullen also said freshman Kaiona Caspillo (106) has earned his starting spot in the lightweight class.

Caspillo scored on a series of first-round near-falls against Tracy senior Thomas Saldana, and then scored on takedowns and reversals to win on an 18-3 technical fall in the second round.

“He will be our106-pound for a while, until we get everybody down to weight. He did a good job,” Mullen said.

Also new to the Kimball varsity squad is senior Vinay Rao (120), who beat Tracy junior Dalton Gualco on a 14-7 decision.

Also scoring pins for Kimball were junior Trent Nicholson (138) who beat Tracy freshman Alex Lopez in 38 seconds; senior Nathan Pearlman (285), who pinned senior Lucas Furtado in 39 seconds; and junior Robert Delgado (113), who pinned freshman Boston Tanzi in 38 seconds.

Tracy won the junior varsity team match 39-23.
