The Buffaloes (1-0) coasted to a 59-12 win after taking a 40-0 lead at the half. Millennium (0-2) finally got into positive offensive yardage in the second half when senior quarterback Gavin Compton found wide receiver Giacomo Oliveri for a series of passes.
The Buffaloes scored right away when Amador’s Ryder Johnson recovered a blocked punt in the Falcon end zone. Amador went on to score in five of their next seven possessions to take a 40-0 lead at the half. Millennium cornerback Dylan Manown picked off a pass to halt one of Amador’s second-quarter drives.
Millennium coach Jayson Dias said that he expected a strong showing from the Buffaloes, who the Falcons beat 28-12 last year in the first game of the season. This year Amador’s team is stacked with juniors and seniors.
“They’re a veteran team. We played them last year and it was flipped, we had all the seniors and they didn’t,” Dias said. “They were physical and they were ready to play.”
The Falcons finished the game with 12 total rushing yards. Compton went four for 13 passing for 110 yards, with all of his competed passes going to Oliveri.
“We decided that we needed to pick it up and never go down,” Oliveri said. “You can’t ever give up. You’ve just got to leave everything on the field.”
Those passes included a 54-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and a 35-yard pass to set up Daryl Martinez’ 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Martinez ran the ball nine times for 25 yards, and Devon Wright ran the ball five times for 17 yards.
Compton said that his team never got discouraged, which gave him the confidence to make something happen in the second half.
“I think this was a good beginning for this team because we saw some good competition,” Compton said. “We just need to improve and get better.”
The Buffaloes collected 362 yards of offense, mostly in the first half. Senior quarterback Jacob Griffin competed five of 10 passes for 69 yards, including a touchdown pass to Donald Wright. Amador’s 293 total yards rushing included two touchdown runs each for Wright and Diego Bernal and touchdown runs for Shane Sweet, Quinton Johnson and Michael Bonilla.
