All of the scoring happened in the first half of Kimball High’s first game of the season, a 21-7 loss in Patterson on Friday, Aug. 31. The Tigers (2-0) had a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Kimball scored in the second quarter when Gaige Allen got away for a 65-yard touchdown run, with Zach Orr making the kick. Patterson scored again in the second quarter.

Kimball coach Steve Anastasio said he expected the Tigers to be a tough matchup for his team’s first game, and added that the Jaguars’ chances to make progress on offense were hampered by five turnovers.

Patterson won the sophomore game 42-12. Jacob Taloa scored on the opening kickoff with an 80-yard return, but the Tigers came back big to take a 34-6 lead at the half. Taloa passed to Rashaad Cooper for a 65-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Patterson also won the freshman game, played at Kimball High on Thursday, Aug. 30, 26-20. The Tigers broke a 20-20 tie on fourth-and-5 with 1:30 left in the game. Scoring for Kimball were Christopher Hall on a 4-yard run, and Myles Hall on a 60-yard run and a 25-yard run.



Liberty 34, West 10

The Wolf Pack (0-2) took its second loss of the season, 34-10, to the Lions (1-1) of Liberty High in Brentwood on Friday, Aug. 31. Liberty had a 21-3 lead at the half, with West scoring in the second quarter on Jackson Nott’s 24-yard field goals.

West coach Matt Loggins said the high points of the game came on defense, with Amrit Singh, Gabe Miller and DeAndre Thomas all snagging interceptions, and Eric Aboud making a sack and also deflecting the pass that Singh would intercept.

Loggins that the offense didn’t start to work right until the fourth quarter, which was when quarterback Bobby Landrum connected with Hayden Ordone on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Nott made the kick.

West’s sophomores (0-2) lost to Liberty 41-7, with Chance Wilson scoring for West in the first quarter on a 3-yard run and Ivan Terriquez making the kick. Spencer Carroll had an interception for West.

West’s freshmen (0-2) lost their game at home against Liberty 27-16 on Thursday, Aug. 30. Christian Velasco scored two touchdowns for West, including a 75-yard kickoff return.



Franklin 33, Tracy 0

The Wildcats of Franklin High (2-0) kept Tracy High’s Bulldog football team (0-2) scoreless on Friday, Aug 31, at Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove.

Tracy coach Matt Shrout said that his team showed significant improvement since last week’s loss at Sierra, but Franklin turned out to be an especially tough opponent.

“They were really good,” he said of the Wildcat team, adding that Tracy's defense held up, especially in the first quarter, and offense made progress but stalled short of the end zone. “I was happy with our guys. We played much better.”

Franklin had a 20-0 lead at the half and scored again in the third and fourth quarters. Tracy’s offense was limited to 131 total yards, with quarterback Luke Hanna completing two passes for 11 yards. Leading rusher was Eric Hawkins with 51 yards on six carries, and Bruce Russell ran the ball 19 times for 49 yards.

Franklin won the sophomore game 39-7. The Wildcats held a 32-0 lead at the half and Tracy scored at the start of the third quarter as Brandon Russell punched the ball in from the 1 yard line and Anthony Karjalainen made the kick. It puts Tracy at 1-1. Score of the freshman game was not available.
