As a former student of George Kelly’s from those days now long ago at Central School, I can safely say that had there been more elementary school principals like him, as well as ones like him at the middle and high school levels, we as a society wouldn’t have two-thirds of the problems we’ve had for the past 35 years.
Mrs. Johnson, my third grade teacher at Central, seemed to understand the necessity of dealing with an autistic student like me. This was before anyone understood what higher functioning autism was.
Altogether, the environment for students at Central was a pretty idyllic model that so many other people from other towns and states I’ve met over the years were sadly deprived of. Mr. Kelly made sure racial and class divisions wouldn’t stain Central’s students and teachers. For that, I’ll always respect and love him.
To sum up, we need more educators like George Kelly, now more than ever. Thank you, Mr. Kelly, for being there for us all!
