Owned and operated by Tania Garcia and her mother Rosa Villavicencio, the two women will be opening the Carousel Children’s Consignment Shop at 49 West 10th St. later this month.
Garcia is still preparing the shop but expects to open by Friday, July 13. In the meantime, she is accepting consignment contracts while they set up.
“Family and friends have already brought in a lot of things,” Garcia said, “and we’re taking consignments from the residents. We’ll take everything as long as it’s gently used. I don’t want people to think we’re a thrift store. It’s completely different. Everything I have I like to look fairly new so people know they are getting a nice item.”
In addition to selling clothing from sizes zero to 12, they also are looking for toys and child gear such as furniture, cribs, carriages, walkers and bouncers and maternity clothing for a mother-to-be.
“We love kids,” said Garcia, mother of Yasmine, 19, Adam, 16, and Tatiana, 7. “It’s a family business.”
Garcia said she thought it would be a nice addition to downtown to have a consignment shop that provided people with children the chance to make a little money on consignment or purchase items at reasonable prices.
Garcia and her husband, John, graduated from Tracy High School. Her parents, Rosa and Leon Pena, owned and operated Lola’s Mexican Food on Sixth Street in the early 1990’s and her mother-in-law was a long-time owner of Diana’s Tax & Bookkeeping.
“I always wanted to own my own shop,” Garcia said. “It’s a dream come true.”
The Carousel Children’s Consignment Shop hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are currently taking consignment orders by calling 209-831-9140 for an appointment.
