Young thespians and budding professional artists have a chance to hone their skills at a camp and workshop series hosted this summer by the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

Both a Theatre Camp and the return of the Professional Development Workshop Series are on tap beginning in June, beginning with the June 11 kickoff of a three-week camp for young aspiring actors.

For young actors

Kids ages 9 to 13 are invited to learn from arts center staff, local teachers and professionals in the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. sessions that last to June 29. The focus, according to the Grand’s theater supervisor, Jeffrey Haskett, will be on basic acting skills, artistic interpretation and character development. Singing, dancing and movement on stage will also be addressed.

In the session’s final week, the campers will create an invitational showcase for family and friends to be presented June 29.

A four-week Teen Camp from July 9 through Aug. 3 for those ages 14 to 18 promises a more intensive curriculum, according to Haskett. The Teen Camp offers electives in dance, acting, musical theater, directing and technical theater, as well as lighting, sound and stage crew training.

The teen campers will go on a field trip to San Francisco to see a midweek matinee performance of “Les Miserables. Teen campers will also put on two performances — one Friday evening show halfway through the camp, and one on the final day that will showcase their theatrical projects.

The two camps cost about $25 a day.
