New Eagle continues family’s Scouting tradition

When Matthew Gainor received his Eagle Scout rank during a Memorial Day weekend Court of Honor, he became the 107th Eagle from Troop 505 and carried on a Scouting tradition established by his grandfather, father and siblings.

To complete the requirements for Boy Scouting’s highest rank, the 18-year-old developed a plan and raised money to restore the north-facing exterior of the historical chapel at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Chester Drive. Gainor removed the deteriorated siding and installed and painted new panels with a team of Scouts and adult volunteers. When they were done, the chapel looked as it had when it was dedicated April 3, 1921, at 10th and F streets.

Gainor, the son of Mark and Morgan Gainor of Tracy, graduated May 24 from Ripon Christian High School. He is the brother of Clifton Gainor, a senior airman at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida; Ryan Gainor, a full-time student at San Joaquin Delta College; and Melanee Wright of Denver.

Aspiring teacher graduates with honors

Tracy High School alumna Jordan Poppoff will graduate magna cum laude from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, on June 9, with a degree in liberal studies and a concentration in child development.

Poppoff, who graduated from Tracy High in 2008, expects to finish her student teaching requirements in December and receive her multiple-subject teaching credential from Cal Poly.

Her parents are Richard and Sharon Poppoff of Tracy, and her sister, Alexis Poppoff, attends University of California, Davis.

Tracy High alumna passes bar

Amy Rae Gowan, a member of Tracy High School’s Class of 2001, recently passed the bar and will practice law in Northern California.

Gowan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from San Jose State University in 2007 and a juris doctorate from University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 2011.

Millennium student named to honor society

Daniel Gutierrez, a graduating senior at Millennium High School, has been chosen as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, a nationwide honor society based in Atlanta.

Membership is based on academic excellence and entitles students to scholarship opportunities and members-only resources and programs.

Kimball High student earns lauds

Tracy resident Lindsey Nicole Schrock, a member of Kimball High School’s Class of 2012, has been awarded a competitive, merit-based scholarship for full tuition at Marietta College, a private liberal arts school in Ohio.

Schrock, who was also named a distinguished student by the San Joaquin County Office of Education, will continue with her performing arts and leadership activities.
