Traina School students take to the yard during the seventh Jump Rope for Heart event Friday, May 4.

This year's fundraiser for the American Heart Association honors Carole Merrill, a Traina teacher who died in August on the second day of school from a heart condition.

Merrill's family attended the event and were handed T-shirts signed by Traina staff members, while kindergarten through eighth-grade students jumped rope.

Mike Merrill, Carole's husband, said the event was an appropriate way to honor his wife. Children Katie, Elizabeth and Joseph were also there to take in the 800 children honoring their mother. Michael, the Merrills' eldest child, is away at college and could not attend.

Last year's event raised about $3,000, according to organizer and first-grade teacher Teresa Lowns.
