The peeling and cracked surface of the tennis courts at Dr. Powers Park has been undergoing a change, as crews work to resurface the aging courts.

The three courts have had their surfaces removed, along with dirt and rock about 9 inches deep. The dirt was leveled and packed down to make way for a new layer of asphalt for the playing surface.

The removal and installation of the new asphalt is being handled by Martin General Engineering. A subcontractor was scheduled to come in and lay down the colored surface layer over the asphalt to give the courts their signature look.

The city also plans to repair several park basketball courts around town. Some will receive a new surface, while some will have their cracks sealed and repaired.

Tennis lessons originally scheduled for the Dr. Powers Park courts have been moved to Hoyt Par during the repair. Work is expected to wrap up by early June.
