STOCKTON — For most of the season, the plan has been simple for West High varsity football head coach Steve Lopez: Get the ball in Dexter Alcala’s hands.
But with the standout senior halfback watching from the trainer’s table, Lopez and the Wolf Pack relied on juniors Desean Watson and Jake Peterson in a 34-7 win Friday night over McNair. The rout was their first road victory of the season.
Alcala suffered a high right ankle sprain on his second carry of the game, early in the first quarter, a 23-yard rush where he dragged an Eagles defender for a little while near the end of his run. He did not return.
Lopez said Alcala will go in for X-rays this week, but wasn’t sure if he’d be ready to go next Friday against Tokay.
Watson, Alcala’s replacement, got the bulk of the West touches, running for 138 yards on 26 carries, most of which came on an 85-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter. He also put the Wolf Pack (1-3 Tri-City Athletic League, 2-7 overall) on the board, giving them a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run.
“We were thinking, ‘Someone has to step up,’” Watson said. “It was just my time, my call, so I went in there.”
Peterson, the junior quarterback, doubled the advantage in the second quarter on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Lambert, who outran two Eagles defensive backs en route to the end zone.
Peterson threw two more touchdown passes in the second half, both to senior tight end Darin Fleming. He finished 4-for-11 passing with 104 yards and three scores.
West’s defense, which forced five turnovers, was able to keep McNair (0-4, 1-8) off the board until late in the fourth quarter, when junior quarterback Marcos Gonzales ran it in from six yards out.
At 7:15 p.m. next Friday, the Wolf Pack will face Tokay on the road to close out the season.
