West High’s varsity girls showed that they have the top water polo team in town after they went to Tracy High on Monday and ran up a 17-3 win.
The girls water polo competition was the first cross-town match this week, and also included a junior varsity game which Tracy won 12-10 in overtime. Varsity and junior varsity boys will play at Tracy High on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.
Teams begin league play next week as West hosts Sonora on Wednesday and Tracy hosts Franklin on Tuesday. Teams will also have a Saturday night cross-town rematch on Oct. 10 at West High.
Monday’s girls varsity game belonged to West from start to finish. The Wolf Pack girls ran up a 7-1 lead at the half, with goals from Kaitlyn Stellhorn, Jennifer Porter, Karri Carrick and Tiffany Story before Tracy’s Lindsey Phelps put on in the net. Story was West’s scoring leader with eight goals, Carrick scored four, Porter and Stellhorn each scored two, and Brook Gard scored one. Phelps scored all three of Tracy’s goals.
In the junior varsity game West got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Mary Lou Manzo, but Tracy got the ball to Mariah Serrato for four goals in the first quarter, and another in the second. West scored three more on the second quarter on goals from Manzo, Lucy Schermesser and Heather Porter. The teams were never more than a goal apart through the second half, and ended the fourth quarter tied 9-9, with West’s last chance to break the tie, a shot by Porter, blocked by Tracy’s Allie Britt in the closing seconds.
They went scoreless through one overtime period, and Serrato scored three in the second overtime period while West scored just one, a shot from Audra Green.
In all, Serrato scored 11 goals for Tracy and Alyssa Inocencio scored one. Manzo scored four for West, Porter scored three and Schermesser scored two.
Hope that we get lots of people out to support the waterpolo programs at both West and Tracy, it is great game, fun to watch and the kids deserve more support from the schools and the communtity. Next cross town match is at the West pool on Sat Oct 10 at 5:30. Come support the kids (doesn't matter what team your cheering for), water polo is a great game!
