In part two of this week's cross-town water polo, Tracy High’s boys varsity team gave the visiting West team no breaks on Wednesday as the Bulldogs ran up a score of 26-7.

Just to show that neither school has a monopoly on water polo talent, the West freshman-sophomore team claimed a 26-10 win just before the varsity game.

These results follow Monday’s girls games, where West had a 17-3 win on the varsity level, and Tracy’s freshman-sophomore girls took a 12-10 win in overtime.

Tracy’s varsity boys controlled their pool with accurate passes, which gave the Bulldog players across their roster chances to take open shots and find their way around West defenders. No single Tracy player dominated the scoreboard. Justin Phelps scored six goals for Tracy, Ben Agee scored five, and Conner Sharpe and Tyler Trew each scored four. Tanner Silva, Brandon Jossey, Andy Levand and Michael Samaniego also scored for Tracy.

“It’s a well balanced group of athletes,” coach Keith Britt said. “It’s a mature group and they have confidence in four or five, six, seven, eight people who can score.”

The Bulldogs’ ability to find the open player in front of the net allowed Tracy to run up a 12-0 lead on West before the Wolf Pack’s Grant Gentry skipped in a shot from the left side of the pool midway through the second quarter. West’s Hewey Burnett scored another for West in the second quarter, and the half ended with Tracy in the lead 15-2.

West stepped up its pace in the second half, but still couldn’t break through Tracy’s defense. Tracy continued to take more shots than West, and Tracy goalie Jake Finney also had at least 12 blocked shots while more of West’s shots went wide or high. It wasn’t until the fourth period, with Tracy already holding a huge lead, that the Wolf Pack outscored the Bulldogs with three goals to Tracy’s two in the quarter.

Gentry scored two of West’s goals, and Burnett, Ryan Johannsen, Conrad Bormann and Josh Rhynes also scored for the Pack.

Freshman-sophomore: West 26, Tracy 10

In preview of the varsity game, but with the teams reversed, West’s freshman-sophomore boys got their players open, and made quick and accurate passes that led to clear shots on goal.

West had Zander Krashinsky in the middle to recover missed and blocked shots, which gave his team plenty of second chances. West also had Matt Van Neikerk on the left side to pass to the inside player and shoot. He and Krashinsky scored nine goals each for West, and Ken Kutita, Matt Dunniway, Jacob Thomassen, and Kevin Oetken scored two each.

Tracy had some offensive strength, but West was quick to get in position on defense, and Wolf Pack goalie Daniel Pickering had at least 10 saves for the night. Tracy’s scorers were Nick Ramon with three goals, and James Thompson and Tim Taylor with two goals each.

West plays again on Saturday at home against Heritage High while Tracy’s varsity girls head to the Woodcreek Tournament in Roseville. League play begins for West at Stagg High on Monday, and Tracy begins league play at home on Tuesday against Franklin.
