Volleyball: West tennis team scores another upset win at Tokay

The West High tennis team scored an upset victory in Lodi against Tri-City Athletic League rival Tokay High on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The 5-4 win puts West (6-1 TCAL) in second place behind St. Mary with three matches left to go in the league season.

West won three of the six singles matches. Sophomore Hanna Nakahara won her match 6-2, 6-1, senior Deanna Vongphachanh won 6-4, 6-4, and senior Simran Randhawa won 6-2, 6-3.

West won two of the three doubles matches with a close win in the No. 2 doubles as senior Judy Huang and junior Abby Mendoza beat their opponents 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (6-8), 10-4. Senior Rosa Borrayo and junior Karla Sasing won their match 6-2, 6-3.

West also won its TCAL match on Oct. 10 at home against McNair. The 6-3 team win included individual wins in straight sets in five of the six singles matches, including a 6-1, 6-0 win for senior Russell Jorda, and a 6-0, 6-1, win in the doubles for junior Shaunna Gaynor-Flynn and senior Judy Huang.

Tracy 9, Chavez 0

Tracy High’s tennis team will go into the last week of the San Joaquin Athletic Association season angling for at least second place in the league, or possibly the league title depending on how SJAA rivals Lodi and Lincoln finish.

Tracy (6-2 SJAA) coasted to a 9-0 win over Chavez at Oak Park in Stockton on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Freshman Melanie Markovic, junior Camille McDaniel, senior Keara O’Brien and sophomore Sarah Kellogg all won in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets, and Chavez forfeited all of the other matches.

The big win for Tracy came on Oct. 10 at home against Lincoln High, which is contending with Lodi for the league title. Tracy won 5-4, with Markovic winning in straight 6-0 sets. Senior Maisy Green beat her singles opponent 7-5, 6-1, Kelloggs won 6-0, 6-3, sophomore Marissa Anderson won 6-2, 6-2, and senior Taylor Hurlock won 6-2, 6-0. Lincoln won the No. 2 singles match and all three doubles matches.

Kimball 7, Sierra 2

The Jaguars finished the Valley Oak League season on Friday, Oct. 11, with a 7-2 win at home over Sierra High of Manteca. The Jaguars (10-4 VOL) finish behind league champion Manteca and runner-up Oakdale, and their third-place finish assures them a place in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, which begin on Monday, Nov. 4.

In Friday’s match the Jaguars dominated the singles, winning all six matches. Junior Kylie Moxley beat her opponents 6-1, 3-6, 10-7, junior Viel Salgarino won 7-5, 6-2, freshman Cher Lin won 6-0, 6-3, junior Lisa Bourgeois won 6-3, 6-3, senior Alyonna Bangayan won 6-0, 6-1, and senior Ysabel Candalla won 6-1, 6-3. In the doubles the Kimball team of freshmen Tarini Mudunuri and Ellen Cheng won 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
