Alfred Subia, of Modesto, was driving a Nissan Pathfinder east on I-580 near the Mountain House Parkway exit at around 2 p.m. on Friday when he crashed, California Highway Patrol officer Adam Shelton said Monday.
CHP officer David Armstrong said at the scene that Subia was driving at a “high rate of speed” when the crash occurred.
Witnesses told police that the SUV veered left into the grass median, crossed over two westbound lanes and went into a field north of the road, Armstrong said.
The Pathfinder then crashed through a chain linked fence at the edge of the freeway embankment and began to roll across the field approximately 20 times, Armstrong said witnesses told police.
A produce hopper, about 200 feet from the edge of the freeway, stopped the vehicle from rolling farther.
Armstrong said the driver sustained serious trauma to the back of his head.
Subia was freed from the wreckage by Tracy fire crews and flown by medical helicopter to a Modesto hospital.
“He’s doing fine,” said Shelton on Tuesday, Sept. 18. “I think he’s still in the hospital. I don’t think its life threatening injuries.”
No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash and the freeway remained open to afternoon commuter traffic.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation but Shelton said Subia will be charged with driving on a suspended license.

Any vehicle can be dangerous if you drive like an idiot.
Poor driving is not exclusive to SUV owners. Every day I see people - perhaps some truly lovely people - make pi$$ poor decisions while driving. Not just those in SUVs.

Maybe it's the vehicle, nah, I know plenty of people with money who don't spend it on cars or trucks.
Maybe it's the city the driver is from, no that can't be it, I know plenty of people in Modesto who have money.
Wait a minute, it just came to me, it's the name of the driver. Yep, all those people with the last name Subia are low income. Man, I'm glad I figured out your logic.
