Tracy High’s water polo teams took four wins over their West High counterparts in the Crosstown Showdown water polo match at the Pinkie Phillips Aquatics Center on Saturday night.
It was a chance for Tracy’s varsity girls to make up for a loss to West on Sept. 21 at Tracy High. Tracy’s freshman-sophomore boys also got back at West for a loss at home Sept. 23.
Tracy’s varsity boys beat West again, but the Wolf Pack held the Bulldogs to a smaller margin than in their first meeting, and Tracy’s freshman-sophomore girls beat West for the second time this season in a match that went into four overtime periods and brought out the competitive spirit that defines the crosstown matchup.
Tracy’s top freshman-sophomore scorer, Mariah Serrato, said that her team found itself up against a more aggressive West squad this time.
“Now that they know how we play, I think they came in stronger because they wanted it as much as we wanted it,” she said.
West’s Heather Porter said neither team was going to let the other get away easily.
“It’s pretty much like any other game, but we really want to win because they are our friends, so we want to show them how good we are,” she said.
Varsity girls: Tracy 8, West 6Tracy’s varsity girls were not going to allow West another lopsided game like the 17-3 win the Wolf Pack took at Tracy’s pool three weeks ago.
“We lost last time really bad. I think we wanted it more,” Tracy’s Lindsey Phelps said, adding that she and other seniors had to take advantage in their last chance to beat West.
The teams were never more than one goal apart through Saturday’s first half, which ended with Tracy up, 6-5. Phelps scored two in the first half for Tracy, and Hope Connolly, Rena Pombo, Kristin Pihlman and Daryl Scott also scored in the first half. West got three goals from Karri Carrick in the first half, and one each from Jennifer Porter and Tiffany Story.
The teams put up defensive fights in the second half. Scott broke through for another Tracy goal in the third, and Kelsey Jessen got a clear shot at the start of the fourth to put Tracy up 8-5. Carrick broke away to score one more for West at the end of the fourth quarter.
Varsity boys: Tracy 12, West 6Even with the 12-6 win, Tracy had a much different game with West in the Wolf Pack’s larger home pool, compared to Tracy’s pool, where the Bulldogs took a 26-7 win Sept. 23.
“Tracy High’s a good team. They have a lot of great arms from the outside,” West’s Ryan Johannsen said. “We got the chance to spread around, which gave us more ability to get the ball in and keep the game closer this time.”
Tracy’s Tyler Trew said that even in West’s pool, his team made adjustments on defense to take the win.
“It was big for us. We want to beat West every time we play them,” Trew said.
The Bulldogs ran up a 5-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Conner Sharpe, Tanner Silva, Brandon Jossey, Justin Phelps and Trew.
But the West boys put up a stronger defense than last time to hold Tracy to three goals from Trew, Jossey and Ben Agee in the second and third quarters, while West’s Hewey Burnett fired in three goals and Gil Maximie scored another.
West cut Tracy’s lead to 8-5 at the start of the fourth with another goal from Burnett before Tracy got its offensive game back. Sharpe, Phelps, Andy Levand and Michael Samaniego scored in the fourth for Tracy, and Burnett scored another for West.
Freshman-sophomore girls: Tracy 6, West 5This match was a proper follow-up to the Sept. 21 game, which Tracy won 12-10 in a second overtime period. On Saturday, it took Tracy four overtime periods to get the 6-5 win.
Tracy took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first half on goals from Serrato, with West’s Audra Green scoring one.
In the third quarter, Porter and Greene put in one more each to tie it at 3-3. Serrato scored again to give Tracy a 4-3 lead in the fourth, and with the clock running down, Porter stole the ball for West and moved in to score on a close shot.
The teams remained scoreless through the first overtime period, with West goalie Emily Stoica blocking two Tracy shots and Tracy’s Kira Johnston blocking one.
Porter scored at the start of second overtime on a pass from Greene, but Tracy evened it up 5-5 with a shot from Annie Foote.
A third, sudden-death overtime passed with no goals from either side, and within the first half-minute of the fourth overtime, Tracy stole the ball from West and got it to Serrato, who scored the winning shot.
Freshman-sophomore boys: Tracy 6, West 4The teams played a defensive game for the first half, with Tracy’s James Thompson scoring two while West’s Ken Kurita and Jacob Thomassen scored one each.
Tracy took a 6-2 lead in the third quarter on three goals from Nick Ramon and one more from Thompson.
A close fourth quarter saw West outshoot Tracy, but it also saw blocks from goalies Scotty White for Tracy and Daniel Pinkering for West.
West’s Thomassen fired in two more goals to cut Tracy’s lead at the end to 6-4.
