Ferguson — the assistant public works director for the city of Oakland — was chosen from among more than 70 applicants, according to a press release from the city of Tracy on Thursday, July 11.
He begins on Aug. 12 and is described in the release as a “Tracy area resident.”
“I believe my experience and knowledge will contribute toward making the city of Tracy even more attractive to economic development and delivering efficient and effective services to the public,” Ferguson stated. “I look forward to establishing productive partnerships with the business and residential communities, and creating strong working relationships with staff.”
Among his duties, Ferguson will oversee more than 125 full-time employees in maintenance, operations and transportation — which includes the Tracy Municipal Airport and the Tracy Transit Station.
Ferguson, 54, began his career as a street maintenance worker about 30 years ago, the release states, and has a background in utility management, street operations and emergency response management. He’s also worked for the city of Hayward during his career.
City Manager Leon Churchill stated he is “confident” that Ferguson’s “experience and leadership will greatly benefit the community.”
“Mr. Ferguson’s inclusive leadership philosophy and experience leading every public works function throughout his career is admirable and impressive,” Churchill stated. “He brings a fresh look to infrastructure improvements and creating operational efficiencies.”
Ferguson — who will serve as a member of the city manager’s executive team — is an accredited member of the American Public Works Association and is vice president of the Northern California chapter, the release states.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Colorado Technical University.
