Mikayla Coelho of Tracy was a major threat at the plate as she led her fastpitch softball team, the under-14 Sorcerer of Concord, to a national third-place finish.

Coelho batted .652 over eight games at the 52-team Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championships from July 23 to 26 in Huntington Beach.

Sorcerer won two games and lost a third in one of two double-elimination brackets. The team then won six games in a row on July 25. Among them was a 6-3 victory against bracket leader OC Batbusters McNee, fueled by a five-run rally in the seventh inning.

Sorcerer finished with a 4-3 loss to the same team the next morning. The tournament champion was Team Mizuno Campbell. Despite sitting out the last two games because of an injured foot, Coelho was one of the team’s leading batters, with 15 base hits and six stolen bases.
