But Woo believes that a little bit of fear helps her stay focused and makes the beam her best event.
“I’m so scared of it I just stay really tight so I don’t fall,” she said on Thursday, May 9, after winning the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League individual title at Classic Gymnastics in Tracy. “I was nervous but I was excited too.”
Woo’s first-place all-around score of 38.050, including first-place finishes on the beam (9.800) and on the floor exercise (9.800) and second-place on the uneven bars (9.400).
She led the Bulldogs to an overall team score of 142.050 and a second-place finish at the SCVAL finals.
Lowell High of San Francisco was first (146.800), Half Moon Bay was third (136.150) and Mercy High was fourth (131.750). Five more schools, including Kimball High, were represented but did not have full teams.
Tracy’s full team now advances to the Central Coast Section meet on Wednesday, May 15, at Gymtowne in South San Francisco.
Also going to the CCS meet is Kimball junior Lauren Giles, who placed third all-around (37.500) on Thursday, including second place on the vault (9.150) and floor exercise (9.750).
Giles said that improvements in practice gave her confidence on Thursday and as she looks forward to the section meet.
“I’m just going to go out and try to have fun and try my best,” she said.
