Tracy Talks: Don't stress over Black Friday

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — unless, perhaps, you work in retail.

I asked the public to weigh in on the subject of Black Friday in a question posted on the Tracy Talks Facebook page. With all the hustle and bustle, is it still possible to enjoy the season?

Hands down, the response was less than enthusiastic about adding shopping to the Thanksgiving holiday agenda.

“I hate Black Friday,” Cindy Fitzgerald wrote in a comment on the Tracy Talks Facebook page. “I worked retail, and there is nothing like seeing a horde of people running for only two TVs. It’s awful. People have been trampled to death because of pure greed.”

Fitzgerald brings up an excellent point: Shoppers beware of limited quantities. Many of those super deals worth standing in line are restricted to the merchandise on hand, often fewer than a dozen items and sometimes only one or two.

“I have shopped and have avoided,” commented Jennifer Little. “These days, I would rather people got to be home with family, because the savings weren’t something I cherished and it was only fun when the family joined in the shopping.”

Little brings up yet another excellent point about family and the holidays. Are we spending quality time with family or depriving ourselves of that time for earlier and earlier store openings?

Consider a possible compromise. Many online shopping sites will offer Black Friday deals that require no elbowing to get into the store and no consumer stampede. Parking promises to be breeze, and there is no dress code — pajamas welcome.

Many stores also offer super one-day sales throughout the year, during which you can use additional percentage-off coupons at the register. The crowds are smaller at these sales, and a better selection of merchandise is available in many cases. Stores often offer extra door-buster deals to lure shoppers in early.

If you are determined to hit the sales early on Black Friday, here are a few things to keep in mind: Read the fine print under that super deal you see advertised and weigh your options. Each time you take your packages to the car, remember to move your vehicle. Car break-ins are popular during the holiday season.

I thought I found a Black Friday special on a phone today at the store but when I read the small print it requires a contract. No thanks. That special wasn't so special anymore. It's not worth the headache to find a few deals today. Staying home next year.
