Tracy Buccaneers win league playoff games

Both the novice and junior varsity Buccaneer teams won their Trans-Valley Youth Football League playoff games Oct. 31 and will travel to Mariposa on Saturday for their league Super Bowl games. The novice team will face the Modesto Patriots at 11 a.m., and the junior varsity teams plays the Central Saints of Modesto at 3 p.m.

Novice: Buccaneers 43, Escalon Outlaws 12

The Buccaneers gave up turnovers on their first two possessions but quickly reminded the Outlaws why the Buccs were the top seed going into to the playoffs.

Ryan Rivera led the Buccs on offense with 136 yards on 10 carries. He scored two touchdowns and twice put the Buccs in scoring position. Jake Dunniway scored three touchdowns, and Andrew Maroulas had 188 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown.

Rivera led on defense with nine tackles, followed by Dunniway with eight tackles. J.J. Jones and Niko Bidanian had six tackles each, Ray Rivera and Myles Walker had five tackles each, Maroulas and Marquise Cunningham had four tackles each, and Daniel Turner and Maroulas each had an interception — Maroulas ran his back 57 yards for a touchdown.

Junior varsity: Buccaneers 16, Ripon Chiefs 0

The Chiefs forced the Buccs into three overtimes the previous time they played. This time, the Buccs’ defense wreaked havoc on the Chiefs all day.

Myles Cunningham led the Buccs’ defense with 13 tackles and harassed Ripon’s quarterback all game. Omar Corral had nine tackles, Conner Hill had seven tackles, Jacob Alvarado, Brandon Russell and Karsten Lee each had six tackles, Justin Mills and Robbie Ramirez each had five tackles, and Isaiah Downes had an interception.

With the ball, Ramirez ran for 51 yards on 12 carries and put the Buccs in scoring position. Russell put the Buccs on the scoreboard first with a 16-yard run, and he had 22 yards on five carries for the day. Mills covered 24 yards on four carries and scored the Buccs’ other touchdown after Ramirez returned an interception 96 yards to the 4-yard line.



Tracy Raiders

The Tracy Raiders went to Modesto on Saturday to face the Vikings and took wins at three levels. The novice team is now 10-0, the junior varsity is 9-1 and the varsity is 6-4. The Raiders will finish their regular season Saturday against the Manteca Chargers at Sierra High School. Games start at 11 a.m.

Junior novice: No score

The Raiders covered 947 yards of offense on the ground, and quarterback Evan Hoyt completed 4-of-9 passes for 87 yards to Lamar Johnson and Reno Zuniga. Preston Wilson carried the ball four times for 176 yards and three touchdowns, Bradley Maddox had six carries for 121 yards and three touchdowns, Lamar Johnson had three carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns, Evan Hoyt ran the ball four times for 163 yards, while Jesse Jordan, Anthony Meza, Anthony Buckhanan and Trey Cox also scored touchdowns.

The Raiders’ defense allowed just 10 total yards from scrimmage. Jaylen Bagby had five tackles and an interception; Wilson had four tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery; Eli Blackwell had three tackles and a sack; Christopher Bronson, Conner Carpenter and Sammo Blackwell had three tackles each; Nolan Willis had two tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble; and Zach Guillen had an interception.

Novice: Raiders 63, Vikings 6

The Raiders’ offense scored on its first play from scrimmage on six of its seven possessions. The defense, meanwhile, forced four turnovers and handed the offense the ball inside the 30-yard line on all but two series.

Cody Bolton completed four touchdown passes and had one touchdown run. Brandon Zaunbrecher caught a touchdown pass and also ran one in. Marcel Dancy caught a touchdown pass and ran back two kickoffs for touchdowns. Marcellous Starling, K.J. Moody and Jake Hiltachk also scored touchdowns, and Jared Bailey had 22 yards receiving.

Daniel Abbate led on defense with five tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception that he returned for 30 yards. William Alexander had six tackles, Bryan Eaton had four tackles, Isiah Grady and Jaylan Smith each had fumble recovers and Darian Burks forced a fumble.

Junior varsity: Raiders 25, Vikings 0

Demari Taylor covered 112 yards on 11 carries and scored for the Raiders in the first quarter on a 4-yard run. Marcus Gammage, with 40 yards on seven carries for the day, scored in the second on a 6-yard run. Taylor scored again in the second on a 31-yard run.

The Raiders made it 25-0 at the half after Jake Serrato returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown and Michael Brown completed the point-after pass to Marcus Gammage.

Bukhari Said and Braedon Oki also carried the ball, and D.J. Burgess caught a 22-yard pass.

The team’s leading defenders were Aaron Denholm, eight tackles; Marcos Aguirre, seven tackles; Jake Serrato, six tackles and an interception; Austin Bishop, five tackles and two sacks; Ryan King, five tackles and an interception; and Rashaad Cooper, four tackles and a sack.

Varsity: Raiders 16, Vikings 12

The Raiders’ strong running game, steady passing game and opportunistic defense clinched a playoff spot.

C.J. Butcher, Adam Rodriguez and Estefano Almanza led the Raiders’ rushing game for a total of 167 yards, with Butcher leading the way with 89 yards and one touchdown. Damon Stroup completed 6-of-7 passes for 56 yards and one touchdown. Joshua Clarke caught four passes for 52 yards, and Keyon Ghorbani caught one for a 4-yard touchdown. 

The defense was led by the play of William Gibbon, Adam Rodriguez and Aaron Avila, who each had six tackles.



Tracy Cougars

The Tracy Cougars hosted the South Stockton Vikings on Saturday at West High. The novice team won to improve its record to 7-2, but the varsity and junior varsity teams both lost, putting the varsity at 7-2 and junior varsity a 5-4. The Cougars finish their regular season Saturday in Modesto against the 49ers.

Junior novice: No score

Ronell Gabriel ran the ball seven times for 236 yards and five touchdowns. Devon Roberts ran the ball 10 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns, Max Hanmore scored a touchdown, and Jorden Harvey ran the ball six times for 49 yards. Mason Sarsfield completed 3-of-4 passes, including a 42-yard pass to Kyle Simpson and passes to Ronell Gabriel and Isaac Anaya.

Gabriel, Ethan McDonals and Jared Albright led on defense, Mateo Decoite had two sacks and two forced fumbles, and Shamar Jeffers and Jacob Peters both recovered fumbles.

Novice: Cougars 42, Vikings 14

Christian Velasco ran back the opening kickoff 65 yards for the Cougars’ first touchdown and later ran a quick counter up the middle for a 60-yard score. Jake Johnson caught a 15-yard slant pass from James Gibbons for the Cougars’ third touchdown. Gibbons ran a weak-side veer for a 46-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Velasco scored again on a 1-yard sweep to the right. In the third quarter Joe Parker passed to Leroy Nhok for a 19-yard touchdown, and Gibbons scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown off a broken pass play in the fourth quarter.

Top defenders for the Cougars were Justin Velasco with five tackles, Mateo Fernandez with four tackles, Joseph Saenz with three tackles and a sack, Brody Sarsfield with three tackles, and Phabian Portio with a tackle and an interception.

Junior varsity: Vikings 36, Cougars 0

Details were not available as of press time.

Varsity: Vikings 32, Cougars 20

The Cougars scored the first two touchdowns of the game but could not keep up the pace after that.

Jaelin Ratliff scored first for the Cougars on a 78-yard kickoff return to open the game. The Cougars then recovered an onside kick, and on the second play from scrimmage Gaige Allen ran it in 43 yards to make the score 14-0.

The Vikings then scored 16 unanswered points before halftime. The Cougars scored one more time on Marcus Lomas’ 5-yard run in the third quarter, adding to his total 69 yards on 13 runs. But the Vikings scored twice more to seal the victory.

The Tracy defense was led by Allen with six tackles, followed by Marcus Lomas and Carlos Ordaz, who each had four. Kenny Daye and Ratliff each broke up a pass.
