Nicholson made the final with two first-round pins, including one in 39 seconds in his semifinal match against Ryan Nantuna of Cosumnes Oaks. He won the title with a pin in 3:03 over Jimmy Felix of Los Banos. It’s Nicholson’s second consecutive Division IV title.
He is one of five Kimball wrestlers to make the top four in the division and advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament on Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Stockton Arena.
Junior Matt Cooper (195) and senior Nate Pearlman (285) both placed second, senior Logan Finley (220) placed third, and junior Robbie Delgado (106) placed fourth.
Junior Vinay Roa got the fifth-place medal, but will not advance, and sophomore Reese Chew made the top eight and was eliminated just short of the medal rounds. Three more Kimball wresters were eliminated after two matches.
The Jaguars placed third in the team scoring with 125.5 points. Oakdale (290) was first and Central Catholic (158) was second. Central Catholic’s team includes senior Joey Abbate of Tracy, winner of the gold medal in the 138-pound bracket.
Tracy High senior Albert Landeros won the gold medal in the 122-pound bracket in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I-A tournament, held Friday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16, at Pitman High in Turlock.
Landeros won four matches, including a 19-4 technical fall, a second-round pin, and 11-1 major decision and a 6-2 decision in the championship match against Josh Villaflor of Franklin High of Elk Grove.
He’s the only one of 12 Tracy High wrestlers at the division tournament to make the top eight and move on to the section Masters tournament. Four of Tracy’s wrestlers went 1-2 on Friday and another went 0-2 and also got a second-round bye. Six more were eliminated after two matches.
West senior Amrit Singh (195) placed second after he went 3-1 on Friday and Saturday at Vintage High in Napa in the SJS Division I-AA tournament. He is one of three West High wrestlers to make the top eight in the division, which advances them to the Masters tournament. Senior Roy Bravo (152) went 3-2 to take fourth place, and senior Mitch Selna (145) went 4-2 for fifth place.
Junior Ron Sasing (106) and sophomore Angel Castillo both went 1-2 and were eliminated just short of the medal rounds and five more West wrestlers were eliminated after two matches.
