Three teams from St. Bernard’s Catholic School competed in the Catholic Youth Organization basketball tournaments at St. Luke’s School in Stockton and St. Anthony’s in Manteca the weekend of Feb. 10 and 11, and one team, the sixth-grade Spirit team, took home a championship.

After an 11-1 league record earned the team a first-round bye, 17 points from Kaodi Dike and 11 points from Oscar Moreno helped the Saints record a 40-30 win over Presentation (Stockton).

Michael Njamfa, Andy Lorusso and Jacob Odell all added four points, and Ian Arucan and Joshua Cuestas both added two.

In the title game, the Saints faced St. Luke’s and recovered from a 9-7 halftime deficit to eke out an 18-17 win — thanks to a total team effort.

“When the season started out, I had 11 basketball players, and when the season ended I had one basketball team with 11 players, playing as one team,” coach Cornealious Moore said. “That is what helped us to have a winning season and ultimately winning the championship game.”

J.R. Seitz, Brian Freitas, Casey Bento and Andrew Jurado made up the rest of the roster.

Triumph live up to name

The Tracy Triumph 10-and-under girls Tracy Unified Competitive Soccer Club Bill Frazier miniseason team concluded the monthlong miniseason with a pair of wins over Stockton and Modesto in Manteca the weekend of Feb. 16 and 17, outscoring their opponents by a combined tally of 8-0.

Reina Perales, Amanda Beck, Garbiele Enzmann, Jill Finney, Taylor Nusser and Eliana Mendoza all recorded goals in a 6-0 walloping of Stockton. Finney’s tally came on a 20-yard blast, and Enzmann’s came off a nifty corner kick from Taylor Hopkins. Enzmann also assisted on Perales’s opener, as the defense limited Stockton’s shot total.

Michelle Hagelston and Gabrielle Tassano stopped what shots did get through for the shutout.

After a short break, the Triumph continued their winning ways with a 2-0 win over Modesto. Hopkins provided the opening strike with an opposite-foot goal and assisted on a goal to Mendoza to give Tracy the victory.

Hagelston made six saves, and Abby Dyer and Amanda Beck dominated the midfield.

Quakes boys make opponents tremble

The Tracy Quakes 10-and-under boys team recorded a pair of wins over Stockton and Lodi the same weekend.

After a scoreless first half, Stockton put the boys from T-town in a 1-0 hole after a nifty cross and score. But within a minute, Tracy’s Ivan Terriquez struck back to tie the game after undressing a pair of defenders with his dribbling.

With five minutes to go, Malik Charles brought the ball up, and Terriquez finished the fast break to give Tracy the win. Brian Noble, Josh Avelar, Danial Muniz and Caleb Druckhammer were only some of the key players instrumental in the win. Goalie Carter Nott recorded five saves.

It only got better from there, as Tracy recorded a 4-0 shutout of Lodi in Game 2.

Terriquez outdribbled a host of defenders for another goal, and Matthew Krause managed to knock in an indirect kick from outside the 18-yard box, sending it past the wall and goalie. Both Krause and Terriquez added another to bring the final tally to 4-0.

Dominic Jordan, Oscar Villasenor and Kyle Hewitt all contributed to the win.

Killers win but avoid jail time

The Tracy Killers 14-and-under girls team either won or tied their games — 0-0 to Ceres and 2-1 over Ebbetts Pass — but stopped short of actually ending their opponents’ lives.

That would have only added insult to injury, as Brittany Sevey and Jackie Trejo dominated the corners to keep Ceres’ scorers silent. Only a stout Ceres defensive effort kept Tracy’s scorers silent, as the Killers managed 15 shots.

Lydia Harrington scored the goal to give Tracy a 1-0 lead off a feed from Savannah Bailey. Danielle Difuntorum dominated the midfield, and Gina Gerstenberger ended the day in net with 41 saves, including a stop of a penalty kick.

Woo continues to wow

After vanquishing the competition at Level 8, Tracy gymnast Justin Woo competed in a Level 9 Gold Country Classic Gymnastics meet in San Francisco on Sunday. In a field of 25 Level 9 competitors ages 12 and 13, the 11-year-old Woo scored first on rings with an 8.95 and third on the pommel with an 8.15. He also notched an 8.5 on parallel bars, an 8.425 on floor, and a 7.55 on vault and high bars.

His all-around score of 49.125 was enough to place him second overall — and his teammate, Jonathan Liu of Fremont, took first.

For a Level 9 competition, all scores from the West Coast Gymnastics Academy had to be counted. And count they did — adding up to a first-place team trophy for Woo and his teammates.
