A day of rain Friday disrupted the annual Nor Cal Classic softball tournament to the extent that all the brackets were scrapped.

Tournament organizers Charlie Pikas, coach of the Pacheco High team and former West High coach, and Tracy High coach Greg Smith said that after most of Friday’s games were canceled, they rearranged the schedule so that the teams that traveled for the tournament could get in as many games as possible Saturday. The tournament started with 48 varsity teams in three brackets, and 33 teams stayed for Saturday’s games.

Though there were no tournament trophies handed out this year, the team from Clovis High (26-1) went 5-0 for the weekend, including wins over West (11-9-1), Tracy (18-4) and Kimball (11-8).

Merced 2, West 0

Merced High’s 2-0 first inning lead held up as the West High Wolf Pack mustered only two hits Saturday at the Tracy Sports Complex. West’s best chance to score came in the third inning, when junior Shelby Weeks tried to score on a two-out, bases-loaded passed ball, but the Merced catcher recovered the ball in time to make the force-out at the plate. Sophomore pitcher Janae Sims gave up four hits for the loss.

Kimball 5, Woodland 0

Senior starting pitcher Amanda Riley struck out 10 batters and allowed three hits over five innings in a shutout of Woodland High on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Park. Riley was also one of the Jaguars’ leading batters, with two hits and two RBIs. Senior Danielle Lallos also had two hits, and senior Gigi Vega doubled and drove in two runs.

Clovis 7, Tracy 1

The Bulldogs were unable to hold back Clovis High’s batters Saturday at the Tracy Sports Complex. The game started well enough for Tracy as senior Ellie Fisher walked and then scored on freshman Mikayla Coelho’s double in the first inning. But Tracy got just two more hits in the game, a pair of singles by sophomore Sonia Reddy and junior Madison Ledda in the fourth inning. Tracy senior pitcher Tayler Misfeldt gave up five hits and seven runs, four of them earned, over four innings.

Clovis 7, Kimball 0

The Jaguars were unable to make use of their four base hits Saturday morning at the Tracy Sports Complex, losing to the Clovis Cougars. Sophomore starting pitcher Samantha Sarmiento took the loss after she gave up seven hits and seven runs, four of them earned. Sarmiento also hit a double.

Kimball 13, Oak Ridge 5

In one of the few games played Friday before the rainstorms, Kimball High beat Oak Ridge High.

Kimball coach Joe Hernandez said that a steady drizzle made for soggy playing conditions and contributed to 13 errors — six for Kimball and seven for Oak Ridge — so only four of the Jaguars’ 13 runs were earned.

Kimball’s eight hits included a home run by senior Amanda Riley and two hits each by senior Gabbi Cox and Llesenia Torres and sophomore Samantha Sarmiento. Riley pitched all five innings for Kimball and gave up three hits and five runs, two of them earned.

Clovis 2, West 0

Clovis High started with two runs in the first inning, and they proved to be all the Cougars needed to hand the Wolf Pack a shutout defeat April 24 at the Tracy Sports Complex. West sophomore pitcher Janae Sims took the loss after she gave up seven hits and struck out six batters. West scattered five hits over the course of the game, including two by junior Shelby Weeks.

Tracy 8, Enochs 3

Senior Jazmin Clarke rounded the bases on an outfield error that drove in three runs in Tracy’s four-run fourth inning April 24 at the Tracy Sports Complex. Seven base hits for the Bulldogs included two doubles by junior Alee Balanon and a double by sophomore Sonia Reddy. Senior starting pitcher Tayler Misfeldt got the win, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out seven batters over six innings.

Tracy 4, Oakdale 1

Tracy opened the Nor Cal Classic tournament with a victory against Oakdale High on April 24 at the Tracy Sports Complex. Tracy’s nine hits included two RBI singles by freshman Mikayla Coelho. Senior Ellie Fisher also had two hits. Senior pitcher Tayler Misfeldt started and got the win, giving up one run on six hits while striking out seven batters over six innings.
