The city has partnered with Tracy Delta Disposal and Dart Container Corporation to conduct a trial test in the recycling of Styrofoam.

Styrofoam, a trademarked product of the Dow company, takes extended periods of time to beak down in landfills, and several efforts to recycle the polystyrene plastic foam are under way nationwide.

An unspecified area of town will be selected to test the addition of Styrofoam to its recycling stream, and Dart Container Corporation, out of Stockton, will recycle the foam into new products, such as base boards and moldings.

The area of choice will receive a postcard about the two-month pilot program that will run from late December through February.

The trial period will determine the feasibility of adding Styrofoam to Delta Disposal’s general recycling stream.

All foam to be recycled must bear the triangle recycle logo with the numeral 6 in the middle.

Items that can be recycled include clean foodservice containers, foam cups, foam plates, foam take-out containers, foam egg cartons, shaped or molded foam packaging, but no foam peanuts.

If the test proves a success, all residents will be notified as to when they can begin putting Styrofoam in their blue recycling containers.
