Last week’s Remember When mystery photo, below left shows what was originally the community center for Wainwright Village and later served a number of other uses.

Wainwright Village, which included 50 four-family public housing units, was constructed in 1943 during World War II to house families of employees at the Tracy Quartermaster Depot and Southern Pacific.

The community center — on East Ninth Street where Lolly Hansen Senior Center is now — also served as a primary school for several years and in the 1950s became home of Tracy’s library. The library moved to Lincoln Park in 1961. The same year, city offices were moved to Wainwright, and the building became the courtroom and also City Council Chambers. The new court building was constructed in 1965, and a new City Hall in 1972.

David Overstreet identified the building and remembered attending school there in the early 1950s, and Linda Corso Wilson recognized it as the old library.
