The road to November begins July 16 for those seeking elected office in Tracy.

When City Hall’s doors open that day, the City Clerk will hand out and accept nomination papers for four elected positions. Up for election on Nov. 6 are treasurer (four-year term), mayor (two-year term), and two council seats (four-year terms).

Several people have already announced they will run, but nothing is official until nominations are turned into the clerk. The filing period will close Aug. 10, though an extended Aug. 15 deadline will be used if no incumbent files to run in a particular race.

Mayor Brent Ives plans to seek his fourth term as the council’s leader, and no one yet has stepped forward to challenge him.

Councilman Mike Maciel has also announced he will defend his seat, while Councilman Steve Abercrombie plans to step down, leaving at least one vacant position on the council.

A third council seat could become available following the fall election, if Councilman Bob Elliott wins his race for county supervisor against Planning Commissioner Rhodesia Ransom. They will face each other, the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters confirmed, after finishing ahead of Tom Benigno in a three-way primary race for that office June 5.

Challenging for Abercrombie’s vacant seat and Maciel’s position on the council are Roger Birdsall, Charles Manne, Ray Morelos and Nancy Young, who have all made clear their intentions to run for city office.

Treasurer Ray McRay has not announced if he will seek re-election, and no one has stepped forward to challenge for the position.

TomBenigno,

It may have been to your advantadge that the ballots are in alphabetical order?

A lot of voters treat these things like a multiple choice, pop quiz.

If less than one third went for the top of the list (of three), then I would say the numbers are not that convincing.

My recommendation, buy a Buick and install those steer horns on the front and hire a driver. Enjoy spending again.

It's funny; as I sit here reading this, I hear a lot of "me,me,me", what about the community as a whole? Politicians seem to "throw mud" at their competition and for what? What does all of that negative talk do for the community? We should be pulling together as a community, not ripping it apart piece by piece. Sounds like today's politicians and their followers need to re-read the first line of the Constitution where it says "We the people".

MissBHaven:

You are correct, but we have a group of bloggers who work for a few special interest politicians who do not like competition, when a true candidate runs against them.

So we spend a lot of time defending ourselves from their lies. The constitution does say we the people, but people get confused on who they are and use negative post about people they don't know.

MissBHaven,

You are incorrect. We are not ripping the community apart. Nor are we taking sides. If you voted for TomBenigno, I applaud you. Not for voting for TomBenigno, but for voting your choice, whatever it is, I don't even ask.

I honestly trust the majority of the voters will make the right choice, regardless what anyone else thinks.

I even applaud TomBenigno for running for office, even though I did not vote for him.

Readers:

Mr. Elliot should resign his position on the city council before continuing his quest to be the 5th district supervisor. If you agree with this reasoning, I wish all my supporters would vote for Ms. Ransom or write in my name( Tom Benigno)for the office of supervisor of the 5th district.

Thank you.

Does anybody forget too, that a newly elected Bob Elliott hasn't even completed 1 year of his 4 before trying to take on a County position? And that we citizens will have no vote to replace him if he does win? Finish your term, show us your commitment, then move up the ladder. What have you done here in Tracy to prove you're worthy?

Mike Maciel the $100,000.00 a year public safety retiree that wants to take from the current public safety personnel, cause its politically correct.

His moral compas is bass akwards.

Mike, give up the same amount of your retirement to the cities general fund that you want the employees to give up, it's only fair.

Hey Mike Maciel, funny how you don't respond to a statement that might cost YOU something. You want employees to pay their entire portion of their retirement. Put up yourself..... 9% of your 100 grand year retirement..... Remember the employees don't pay into social security, BTW- people that pay into social security only pay 6%. Why should public employees pay more?
