Services will be private for June Anna Garlock Schaeffer, 92, a longtime Vernalis resident, who died Oct. 30.
Mrs. Schaeffer was born in Yamhill County, Ore., to Willard and Lottie Garlock. She attended Linfield College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in French, and Oregon State University, where she received her teaching degree.
While employed as a social worker in Yamhill County, she met Max Alfred Schaeffer, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army who fought in the Pacific during World War II. They were married in April 1945, and the couple settled in Vernalis, where the Schaeffer family lived for 90 years.
In Vernalis, Mrs. Schaeffer worked part time as a teacher and postmaster for 20 years. She also volunteered for many organizations, including leading summer school and Christian education at both Tracy First United Methodist Church and Federated Methodist-Presbyterian Church in Patterson. She helped start the Vernalis 4-H Club, and she enjoyed helping students learn to read at Rising Sun School in Vernalis.
Mrs. Schaeffer is survived by her six children, Jo Ann Raissi, and her husband, Sassan, of Morgan Hill, William Alfred Schaeffer of Stockton, James Ross Schaeffer of Cupertino, Penny Cook, and her husband, Paul Allen, of Menifee, Susan Schaeffer of Corona and John Duncan Schaeffer of Vernalis; five grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Max Alfred Schaeffer, in 2004.
Burial will be in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave., is handling arrangements.
