Mr. Schmidt, a native of Bruce, S.D., had lived in Tracy for 54 years.
Born June 24, 1933, he graduated from Bruce High School in 1951 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later worked 36 years as a production supervisor for H.J. Heinz Co. in Tracy.
Mr. Schmidt was a parishioner of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1537, for which he served as quartermaster, and American Legion Post 172.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Castro, and her husband, Larry, of Lathrop; two sisters, Cara Ann Perry, and her husband, Dick, of Livingston, Mont., and Lana Lee Schmidt of Minneapolis, Minn.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 53 years, Joanne Faye Schmidt; a daughter, Tanya Ann Schmidt; and a sister, Lila Mae Blanchett.
Wednesday’s memorial will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1635 Chester Drive. Inurnment, in Tracy Cemetery, will be private. Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave., is handling arrangements.
