All of the scoring happened in the first half. The Knights (2-4, 1-0 Central California Athletic Alliance) brought a running game that pounded out 202 yards in the first half. By the end of the second quarter Falcons senior running back Devon Wright found his rhythm in a drive that covered 53 yards on six plays, finishing with a 3-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Gavin Compton to senior tight end Alex Lambert.
The Falcons (1-5, 0-1 CCAA) couldn’t contain the Knights’ running backs in the first half. Stone Ridge junior Estevon Herrera ran for 169 yards on 26 carries for the night, including a touchdown run and two 2-point conversions. Stone Ridge senior James Hultgren ran for 82 yards on eight carries, including a touchdown. The Knights’ Kyle Singer scored on a touchdown run, and quarterback Eric Doss threw a touchdown pass to Josh Amaral. Doss also intercepted a Millennium pass and ran it back from midfield for a touchdown.
In all, the Knights covered 346 yards on offense, including 285 yards rushing and 61 yards passing.
Falcon sophomore middle linebacker Carlos Martinez, who had 20 tackles for the night, said it was tough to stop Herrera’s charges up the middle.
“He’s a heck of a player,” Martinez said. “Anybody who has heart can do that. They just wanted it.”
Wright added that his team responded well in the second half.
“They came out hitting hard. We just had to keep going at it,” Wright said. “We can’t stop and can’t give up. We’ve just go to put our heart in it and keep running.”
The Falcons covered 198 yards rushing. Wright covered 122 yards on 14 carries and Compton completed four of 19 passes for 57 yards, with three interceptions. Starting running back Daryl Martinez ran only four plays before he suffered a reinjured leg and a dislocated shoulder in the first quarter. Compton also was knocked out of the game with a possible concussion at the start of the fourth quarter.
Wright and Izaiah Williams led the Falcon running game in the second half, when the Falcons got inside the Stone Ridge 20-yard line three times, but were turned away short of the goal line each time. Millennium coach Jayson Dias said the second half showed encouraging signs from his team’s young players.
“We were able to show signs of moving the ball. We just weren’t able to finish,” Dias said.
