Brooklyn Johnson received more than a diploma today when her New Jerusalem School kindergarten class was promoted to first grade.

The 6-year-old received a hug from her father, Timothy, a surprise guest who made it back from a U.S. Army deployment to South Korea.

Timothy is a 1998 graduate of Tracy High who serves in the Army as a sergeant with the military police. He returned from his most recent deployment just in time to watch his daughter graduate with the rest of her classmates.

As the ceremony started, New Jerusalem School Principal Steve Payne announced that Johnson was in the room. Brooklyn cried and got a hug from her father before the ceremony continued.

I am so happy for both of them! What a wonderful graduation. Thanks TP for telling the community about this. A heartwarming story is always welcome.

Mr. Payne does rock and the New J district does too! My kids have been out there at the chater for many years and they always put the students needs first. My youngest will grad on Sat. and I will miss the staff and their big hearts!

This made me cry. I am very happy that he got to see his daughter receive her diploma.
