San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Ian Hogg, 41, on Friday, Feb. 8, after he allegedly assaulted his father and walked away from the Star Motel with his father’s handgun.

Hogg was arrested on 11th Street near MacArthur Drive several hours after deputies received a call around 3 p.m. that Hogg, described by a lieutenant at the scene as “mentally challenged,” was in an argument with his 72-year-old father and allegedly assaulted him at the motel where they live together, 4881 W. 11th St.

After the assault, he allegedly took a handgun owned by his father and was seen running west on 11th Street toward Tracy, according to San Joaquin County Sheriff’s office spokesman Les Garcia.

Garcia said Hogg warned his father against calling police because he would charge at officers with the gun and force them to shoot him.

Deputies armed with automatic rifles and three K-9 teams began to search 11th Street from the motel to the Tracy city limits.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter from Sacramento was called to help look for Hogg.

Sheriff’s patrol cars were stationed at Banta and Chrisman roads as search teams made their way west along 11th Street toward Tracy.

Deputies also scoured the fields and businesses on the north side of 11th Street, but eventually called off the search with no sign of Hogg.

Garcia said he did not know how long the search on 11th Street lasted.

Later that evening, deputies were called by Hogg’s father, who said his son had called him from near Tracy Liquors, 1220 W. 11th St., to say he was going to kill himself.

Garcia said deputies found Hogg walking on 11th Street at the MacArthur Drive intersection, where he was arrested.

Garcia said the gun was found after Hogg told them he hid it under a log by an electrical transmission tower on the north side of the road across from the Tracy Elks Lodge, 6400 W. 11th St.

Hogg had walked more than 4½ miles on 11th Street from the motel to the middle of Tracy before he was arrested.

Hogg was booked into San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp at 10:25 p.m. on charges of robbery and elder abuse.

He is being held on $53,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Department 1 of San Joaquin Superior Court in Manteca at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Hogg’s father declined help from Adult Protective Services and declined to seek an emergency protective order against his son.

Chris, I don't know if you've had some sort of epiphany but the change in your comments over the last few days is somewhat amazing. I'd like to compliment you on the change in tone and sincerely hope it wasn't brought about by some sort of bad event in your life.

I take back all the negative things I said about Tracy PD. I've let my beefs go and stuff like this makes me glad they are around.

It seems like so many people are carrying guns around here in broad daylight. It's scary even to go to the bank, you just never know anymore. Maybe this town does need a stop and frisk policy!

I'm glad to read that this ended with no one getting hurt.

I hope he gets the help he obviously needs.
