In the past two years, the girls raised nearly $1,000 for the relay — about $250 the first year and about $700 the second year. This year, with the help of their sisters, Camden Hatch, 6, and Allison Brown, 5, they set a goal to raise $1,000 and ended up making more than $1,600 in two hours by selling lemonade and baked goods.
The 8-year-olds started the fundraiser three years ago “to raise money to give to cancer so people won’t die anymore,” Sydney said.
Sydney and Camden’s father had cancer several years ago, and Allison and Emma’s grandparents are also cancer survivors.
This year, the girls dedicated the effort to a family friend, Russell Wentworth, who is in the late stages of brain cancer.
