The Tracy, West and Kimball boys basketball teams are now into the 25th annual Tracy-West Winter Holiday Classic, which started with games at Tracy and West high schools on Thursday, Dec. 12.
This year, the tournament is down to eight teams instead of the usual 16, and the event is being held a week earlier than usual.
West High coach Derek Sprecksel, co-organizer of the event with Tracy coach Junior Cueva, said that the changes have to do with the availability of teams during the holiday season. The event usually falls on the week before Christmas when schools are on winter break.
“It’s harder and harder to get 16 teams to commit,” Sprecksel said. “Eight teams just seems to be more manageable.”
Sprecksel added that with school in session for another week and classes going into end-of-the-semester exams on Monday, Dec. 16, he hopes to see more students in the stands for the games.
West (4-1), aiming for its fourth consecutive tournament title, opened against Pacheco High (1-3) of Los Banos on Thursday. Pacheco has already lost to Tracy and Kimball this fall.
Kimball (6-1), which placed third at the 2012 tournament, opened against Modesto (1-4) on Thursday, and Tracy (4-1) opened against Lathrop (3-0). Also playing Thursday were Johansen (1-3) of Modesto against Castlemont (0-1) of Oakland.
Results of those games were not available at press time and can be found at www.tracypress.com.
Games continue at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Tracy and West high schools and at 3, 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Tracy High, concluding with the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
