Residents of Mountain House are being asked to use their artistic skill and help Lammersville Unified School District design a panther mascot for the new Altamont School.

According to spokeswoman Noel Balzarini, the district sent survey forms in January to Altamont Village children in grades six through eight and their families. “Approximately 175 resident students participated (in the surveys),” she said. “We did a survey for colors and then a survey for the mascot and now we need a design.”

The results revealed the kids want dark purple and gold as their school colors and a panther as their mascot.

Superintendent Kirk Nicholas said the mascot design contest was motivated by a desire to promote art and do something different with input from the community.

Anyone interested in submitting an entry into the panther design contest can do so by going on the district website at

Deadline for submissions is 9 a.m. on Friday.

The K-8 Altamont School broke ground May 15 and is slated to open in August. It will be the fifth elementary school to open in the district.
