The Kimball High boys tennis team met its match on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.
Visiting Mira Loma High of Carmichael beat the Jaguars 7-2, with wins in four of the singles matches and all three doubles matches.
The outcome ends the Jagaurs’ season at 16-2, 13-1 in the Valley Oak League, while Mira Loma (14-3, 8-2 Capital Athletic League) moves on to the semifinals at Bella Vista High in Fair Oaks on Tuesday against the winner of Monday’s Bella Vista vs. Vanden match. Results of that match were unavailable.
Kimball sophomore Garrett Chun had one of the most competitive matches, beating Mira Loma freshman Kendall 6-1, 7-6 in the No. 1 singles match, with the second set going to a 12-10 tiebreaker.
When not competing for their high schools, both Chun and Johnson compete together in United States Tennis Association tournaments, often as doubles partners.
“This is the hardest match I’ve had all year,” Chun said. “We just love to compete, and this was win or go home. I wanted us to win but they had the deeper team.”
The other win for Kimball came in the No. 3 singles, where senior Mark Dalupan beat Mira Loma’s Manu Prakasam 6-4, 6-3.
Dalupan said that while he had and advantage as a more experienced player his Kimball teammates faces some of their toughest opponents this year.
“Today my mindset was to focus on my match and just do my part,” Dalupan said. “They did play hard, but the (Mira Loma) players came out and played better.”
The team match also saw close individual matches in the No. 2 singles, where Kimball junior Nick Reilley nearly came from behind in the second set Mira Loma’s Edward Ni came through in the end to win it 6-3, 7-5, and Mira Loma’s Anish Balaji also made a comeback to beat Kimball sophomore Ivan Acosta 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Mira Loma won all of the other matches in straight sets.
