West’s 80-57 win over the visiting Ceres Bulldogs on Wednesday, Nov. 28, gives the Wolf Pack some momentum going into its first road game on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at McClymonds High in Oakland.
West (3-0) overcame a 17-13 first-quarter deficit with 19 unanswered points in the second quarter.
While Ceres (0-2) started to catch up in the third, a string of shots by junior guard Kenneth Daye at the start of the fourth, plus five 3-point shots from senior guard Justin Saar in the second half, gave the Pack a strong lead.
“I think we brought a lot of energy,” Saar said. “Even our bench players brought a lot of energy. We’ve just been playing really fast and together like a team.”
Saar totaled 19 points, and Daye scored 18. Senior DeAndre Thompson scored 12 points and senior Ernest Turner scored 10.
Kimball 63, Pacheco 38
The Jaguars applied a strong press in the second quarter to force turnovers and go on a scoring spree in the blowout win in Los Banos on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Kimball (1-1) had a 38-21 lead at the half and continued to outscore Pacheco in the second half.
Evan Owens led the Kimball offense with 18 points while DeVante Baisa scored 15 points and Chandler Alves tallied 11.
West 64, Johansen 63
Justin Saar established himself as West’s outside shot specialist Saturday, Nov. 24, in a nailbiter of a comeback win over visiting Johansen High of Modesto.
West’s senior forward scored 17 points for the night, including the game-winning 2-point jump shot with two seconds left on the clock. Saar also hit four 3-point shots on Saturday.
West coach Derek Sprecksel said that the Wolf Pack trailed for the entire game prior to Saar’s clutch shot.
The Vikings were ahead 55-44 going into the fourth quarter and held that lead until West went on a scoring run in the final three minutes.
West’s other top scorers were DeAndre Thompson (16 points), Kenneth Daye (13) and Michael Young (10).
Livermore 64, Kimball 63
The Jaguars temporarily overcame a 35-28 halftime deficit but fell behind in the fourth quarter for a loss at Livermore High in the first game of the season Saturday, Nov. 24.
Senior guard DeVante Baisa led the Jaguars’ offense with 20 points, while senior forward Alex Toledo scored 17 and senior forward Derek Van de Streek had 12 rebounds.
West 79, Chavez 65
West High’s varsity boys basketball team had its fast-paced game on display Friday, Nov. 23, in a win at home over visiting Chavez High of Stockton in the Wolf Pack’s first game of the season.
While the Titans out-rebounded the Wolf Pack, West’s aggressive defense forced repeated turnovers had the ball-handling skills to keep the offensive advantage.
“It’s just a really good opening to our season,” said West coach Derek Sprecksel. “A lot of these kids are getting their first heavy minutes as varsity players. They really showed what they could do and really responded tonight.”
Senior forward DeAndre Thompson was West’s leading scorer with 24 points. Michael Young scored 15 while Hayden Ordone, Justin Saar and Kenneth Daye each recorded 11.
