died 2009-12-04
Services are pending for music aficionado Bob Konopka, 63, of Tracy, who died Friday at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Konopka was born Oct. 10, 1946, in Portland, Ore., and moved from San Mateo to Tracy five years ago.

He provided event security for concerts and other musical entertainment for two decades, including the past six years with National Event Company West. He enjoyed attending concerts, reading the New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle and learning about upcoming music events.

According to his family, he was a “Deadhead” for 40 years and traveled the world to attend Grateful Dead concerts, including stops in Europe. A lover of animals, he referred to himself a “vegetarian junk food hippie.” He took pride in caring for his car, which had run more than 300,000 miles.

Mr. Konopka is survived by his wife of seven years, Rose Konopka of Tracy; stepdaughter, Shawna Comiskey, and her husband, Jason, of Pleasant Hill; and sister, Kathleen Lauer of Redwood City.

Mr. Konopka’s family will plan a celebration of life at a later date. Burial will be private. Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave., is handling arrangements.

Contributions in Mr. Konopka’s name may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 207 E. Alpine Ave., Stockton 95204; or to the Tracy Animal Shelter, 370 Arbor Road, Tracy 95376.
