More than 22,000 students headed back to class on Monday, Aug. 13 as the 2012-13 school year began for school districts in and near Tracy.

Incoming high school freshman to kindergarten students made their first appearances in schools on the first day.

At West High School, all students and faculty walked on a red carpet into school as they started their year in style.

Tracy High students arrived to the sound of construction as work continued on the new Wayne Schneider Stadium.

Central School students were donning donated backpacks from Costco as they got to know their teachers and schedules.

Students at the Tracy Learning Center began their school year on Aug. 6.

WOw the red carpet is a nice touch. Why does Central school get free backpacks and the other schools don't? My daughter goes to Villalovoz and din't get anything for free. I spent $40 at Walmart this year for markers and post its.

"Why does Central school get free backpacks and the other schools don't.

Probably because one of th parents or teachers affiliated with th school got out of their armchair, drove over to Walmart an asked em fer a donation ta support th students in th school.

Over th years Walmart has been very good about givin thangs ta schools an this is but another example.

If th kids frum Villalovoz didn't get "anything for free" it's most likely because th adults affiliated with th school were too busy doin somethang else ta trouble themselves ta go an ask for a contribution.

Note: Walmart an other retailers are under no obligation ta give anythang ta th schools. Th fact they do so is a testamony ta thair good will.

West High School went WAY above and beyond with the red carpet. Once again, West shows how classy they are. Would love to see more of the red carpet. It probably would make sense to be the headlining picture too, but thank you for being there to capture that moment.
