Dominique Harrison of Tracy, a sophomore on the Contra Costa College football team in San Pablo, has been named defensive player of the year for the Bay Valley Conference.
Harrison is a 2011 graduate of Tracy High, where he was a wide receiver and defensive back for the Bulldogs.
He helped the Contra Costa Comets team to a 7-4 record this year and a share of the conference title. As a defensive back, he logged three interceptions for the Comets.
The Comets played for the Northern California Football Association Southern Division title but lost that game to Hartnell College of Salinas 37-26 on Nov. 23.
Also gaining top conference honors was Contra Costa College running back Davonte Sapp-Lynch, BVC offensive player of the year, who attended West High in his sophomore year. He eventually transferred to Sheldon High in Sacramento and graduated in 2011.
Former Bulldog finishes season on championship team
Joshua Bongiovanni, a 2013 graduate of Tracy High, joins his Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds teammates as Lone Star Conference co-champions.
The Greyhounds went 7-3, 5-1 LSC, for the 2013 season.
Bongiovanni is an offensive lineman for the Greyhounds, who won six games in a row at the end of the season, including a 42-53 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 16.
While at Tracy High, Bongiovanni was the San Joaquin Athletic Association lineman of the year for 2012 and was named to the 2013 Lions All-Star team. He also earned the Weeks Cup Scholar-Athlete award in his junior year for carrying a 4.0 GPA.
West grad Alcala gains Sac State football award
West High graduate Dexter Alcala, Class of 2010, was selected as the most valuable player for the special-teams unit of the California State University, Sacramento, football team.
Alcala is a junior defensive back on the Hornets team, which went 5-7 overall for 2013, 4-4 in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference. He led special teams with 12 tackles during the season and also stepped in as starting defensive back in the last three games, recording 28 more tackles.
